The Beaver Lake Project @ The Western Front
By Donation
sound 8pm
303 East 8th Ave, Vancouver
In development since 2021, The Beaver Lake Project derives its musical structure from motion observed in relation to a fixed point of listening. Drawing on recordings made at Beaver Lake in Vancouver’s Stanley Park, the work translates relationships among pitch, amplitude, timbre, and duration into a performance framework for an ensemble. Rather than using field recording to reproduce or preserve a sonic environment, Clément considers how sound behaves in relation to space, site, and listening. Through sustained attention, temporal relationships embedded in the recordings are measured, interpreted, and translated into music.
The performance brings together twelve local musicians selected through an open call to realize a durational score of sustained tones, gradual pitch movement, and extended listening. Arranged for three quartets, the performance unfolds over 100 minutes, with each quartet temporally staggered so that both silence and simultaneity is compositional.
The musicians are Khalil Alomar (synth), Julie Andreyev (theremin), Héloïse Auvray (electric bass with ebow), Adrian Avendaño (percussion), Jaiden Christie (violin), Anat Elkayam (electronics), Elisa Ferrari (prepared zither with ebow), JT Gladysz (synth), Sam Meadahl (lap steel), Alvaro Rojas (guitar), Nikko Whitworth (double bass), and Rafael Zen (electronics).

Elisa Thorn @ The Erratics Indie Arts Club
Doors: 7pm, Sound 8pm
Tickets starting at $40
Students: $24
Seniors: $25
#150, 625 11 Ave SW, Calgary
A special partnership between New Works Calgary and Springboard Performance, this evening brings together three radical interdisciplinary arts innovators: Vancouver harpist, composer, and interdisciplinary artist Elisa Thorn, alongside Calgary movement artists Alexandra Contreras and Jennifer Clarke.
Each artist brings a distinctly contemporary creative language to the stage, while sharing an appetite for experimentation, risk, and unexpected connections. The evening features an experimental song cycle by Thorn and her collaborators Nikko Whitworth and Trent Freeman, a solo dance/theatre work by Contreras, and a newly commissioned improvisational collaboration between Thorn and Clarke.
Known for her radical and contemporary approach to the harp, Thorn creates music that, as Rhythm Changes writes, “electrifies your expectations.” Clarke brings her own “adventurous spirit” and “improvisatory verve” (Georgia Straight) to a practice that moves fluidly between choreography, movement, and sound. Contreras completes the trio with a deeply human choreographic voice that explores the stories and experiences we carry in our bodies.
Together, these three radical interdisciplinary arts innovators create an evening of music, movement, and spontaneous exchange where composition meets improvisation, the personal meets the experimental, and three singular artistic voices come together to discover what can happen in the space between them.
